Security Guard Charged with Murder
Australia - 2/08/2004
A Security Guard goes about her daily duties, ensuring large amounts of money are delivered safely to their destinations. She has an enormous responsibility. She is essentially responsible for her clients' livelihoods.
One day, she is confronted by a potential thief. During the ensuing struggle, she is assaulted, her eye socket is broken and her head is bleeding. The thief takes off with the bag of money. What does she do? She pulls out her gun (that she obviously has for a reason) and shoots the thief.
Justified? Apparently not – according to NSW police. The security guard has been charged with murder. Why? It can only be assumed that because the thief was leaving, she did not shoot him in self defence.
As tragic as it is for a person to lose their life, they did so as a result of their own actions. The thief was obviously aware that the security guard had a gun, so was obviously aware that there was a risk that he would be fired upon.
The security guard does not deserve to be treated as a murderer. While there is a question as to whether her actions were justified, they were certainly understandable. I wish her well in her upcoming court appearance.
