What is Homophobia?
General - 29/06/2004
If I were to ask this question to people on the street, they’d probably respond with something like, "It’s when people hate someone ’cause they’re gay," or "It’s when people insult or make bad jokes about people who are gay."
While these are obvious forms of homophobia, there are many more subtle forms that exist – sometimes impacting dramatically on the lives of those affected. It could be in the form of assumptions made, "e.g. that guy’s gay so he goes around looking for sex from other guys." There appears to be a large assumption made by certain sections of heterosexual society that all gay men are into pornography, beat sex and chasing underage guys – and/or that their standards are generally lower than heterosexuals. Someone with this view, when placed in a decision-making position about a situation that has arisen because of someone else with the SAME view, can have a devastating effect on someone – potentially ruining their lives.
