Internet Explorer no longer free

General - 21/10/2006

Microsoft has just released the final version of their latest web browsing software – Internet Explorer 7 (or IE7 for short).

Like always, you can download it for free – but watch out when you go to install it.  IE7 uses Windows Genuine Advantage.  This simply means that it checks to see if you have a legitimately licensed (purchased) copy of Windows before it will let you install it.  If you do not have a legitimate copy, you will not be able to install it.

What does this mean?  For the many people who chose not to purchase Microsoft’s overpriced operating system and acquire it through other means, they will not be able to upgrade to the latest and greatest offering from Microsoft.

The reality is that Internet Explorer is no longer free. It is an "add-on" for a product that must be purchased legitimately.

So what’s the alternative?
