Queensland Rail Strike
Queensland - 3/02/2006
I’m sitting at home, not game enough to attempt to find alternative transport to work after unions called a snap 24-hour rail strike.
This sudden action has inconvenienced thousands of rail commuters.
They didn’t just threaten to take action. They didn’t give warning that they WOULD take action. (This would have at least allowed commuters to make alternative arrangements.) Instead they put themselves ahead of thousands of others in what could only be described as a selfish, pigheaded act.
Don’t get me wrong. I am all for unions. They represent the workers and ensure that they get the best deal possible. But sometimes they go a bit far.
The last time services were disrupted to this extent, someone was arrested for claiming he had planted a bomb. Should union officials suffer the same fate?
I wonder about the thousands, possibly millions of dollars lost by individuals and companies affected by the snap strike – as people pay for parking, alternative transport, are late in or just don’t show up at all. Perhaps it’s time to form a class action and sue the unions for losses.
