"Terror" Strikes Brisbane

Queensland - 14/11/2005

I write this as I sit at home on holidays, thankful in many ways that I am missing the chaos that is besetting the Brisbane public transport system following threats of terrorism.

During the 9/11 and several other terrorist attacks, I considered myself lucky that I lived in the fairly small city of Maryborough, Queensland.  This changed at the start of the year when I moved to Brisbane.

Today’s events have reminded me that I am personally not safe from the threat of terrorism.  I catch a train to work every day – a potential target for terror attacks.

I don’t see what terrorists hope to achieve with their campaigns of bombings and taking of innocent lives.  It only serves to create more hatred in the world.  When will these people realise that violence doesn’t solve anything?

These latest threats are not going to prevent me from going about my daily business.  As many have said, if the threat of terrorism prevents you from going about your everyday life, then the terrorists have already one.

So to the terrorist:  You are achieving nothing apart from turning the world against you.  Is that what you wanted to achieve?
