The disappearance of Daniel Morcombe
Queensland - 27/05/2004
The disappearance of Daniel Morcombe has no doubt stirred the emotions of many Queenslanders – especially those with children of their own. I am sure many Queenslanders share the frustration of not knowing what happened to Daniel – and have developed their own "theories".
For some reason, this is a case I have felt strongly about since it was first reported late last year – and my feelings and theories have not significantly changed.
What happened on 7 December 2003? Was Daniel forcefully abducted? I find it difficult to believe that a 13yo of "stocky build" could be forced into a car without putting up a significant enough struggle for a passer-by on the busy road to notice. Did Daniel accept a lift from a stranger after the bus didn’t stop? In this day and age, it is unlikely that any kid – even remotely switched-on – would accept a lift from a complete stranger.
This leads to the theory that Daniel knew his "abductor", which raises another question. Was this a chance encounter – or was something planned?
The feeling I had from the start is that this was not a chance encounter – at least not entirely. I think it is possible that Daniel knew his abductor – perhaps through conversations on the Internet and possibly mobile phone (if Daniel had one). It may have even been the case that Daniel wanted (or was brainwashed) to go with his abductor – and believed he would have had a better life by doing so. If this was the case, he may be unaware of his parents’ heartache and desperate attempts to find him.
Theories aside, this has to be an extremely difficult time for Daniel’s family. The anguish felt by Daniel’s parents is evident on news stories and the ad campaign to find him. It must be equally as difficult for Daniel’s twin brother, who had to endure a birthday "alone". If Daniel is not found, each birthday will be a reminder of his disappearance. Pretty soon Daniel’s twin will begin to dread birthdays, rather than looking forward to them. This is not something anyone should have to endure. For both Daniel’s sake, and the sake of his family – if you know anything that may help find Daniel, please contact Crime Stoppers. It’s not too late!
