What is Christmas?

General - 24/12/2004

What is Christmas to you?  Christmas holds many meanings, mainly traditional and religious.  But does that mean you have to be a traditionalist or religious to celebrate it?  What if you don’t hold to any of these beliefs?  What if you are part of a religion that chooses not to celebrate Christmas?  What if you are from a country that does not traditionally celebrate Christmas?

Each year as Christmas approaches, the arranging presents and crowds at shopping centres have me cursing Christmas.  Not to mention it’s expected that we’ll have the traditional family get-together on Christmas day and the exchange and opening of presents that we typically knew we were getting anyway.  The day is typically extremely hot and uncomfortable.

But at the end of the day (literally), I find myself feeling grateful for Christmas.  It brings the family together and, although we’re still spending money to buy each other stuff we probably would’ve spent money on ourselves for, there’s just something about the whole "giving" thing.  It makes one feel special and important.

I am fortunate to be part of a family that has regular get-togethers.  But I sometimes wonder about families that only get together at Christmas time – and how much more important Christmas must be for them.  Then I feel sorry for the families who do not celebrate Christmas – for whatever reason.

As well as family, Christmas is a time to be nice to your "neighbour".  People send Christmas cards and wishes with messages that show their appreciation for the recipient.  It’s a time for encouragement no matter what situation you are in.

In the end, I don’t think it matters whether you hold the traditional or religious beliefs of Christmas.  It’s a great time to get together with family, exchange gifts and send messages of appreciation to others.

So even if you don’t believe in Jesus or Santa Claus, learn to appreciate Christmas for the positive and encouraging effect is has on people all around the world.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!
