Alcohol Bans

Queensland - 26/05/2004

I don’t usually comment on "political" issues, but recently in the news we saw a group of people deliberately smuggling alcohol into a community where an alcohol ban is in place.  They did so by wandering through bush and swamp land.  Some are suggesting that this is proof that the alcohol bans are not working, but the only thing this proves is that the people in the news story have a complete disrespect for the law.  If the only way to stop others from breaking the law is making an example of the ones who are caught, I say go for it!  If we allow them to get away with their actions, others will only follow.

There are obviously more issues to deal with than just the law.  A number of people in these communities have probably had a long history of alcohol abuse and the addiction has driven them to break the law.  What should we do?  Send in counsellor?  Perhaps!  But we can only help people who WANT to be helped.

Banning alcohol, while probably not 100% effective, goes a long way in helping the people of these communities and I applaud this undertaking.  There is probably more than can and needs to be done, but this is an important step in helping the lives of those affected by alcohol abuse.
